Carol Ann Bennett, 76, passed away at St. Josephâs Nursing Home on October 26, 2019, with her loving family by her side. She was born to the late Wesley and Agnes McGowan, March 8, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY. Carol graduated from St. Saviors High School in 1961 and received her RN in Nursing from St Vincentâs Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. She worked at Southside Hospital and then at both the Sayville and West Islip Pediatric Offices until her retirement. She was married to Michael Joseph Bennett on June 26, 1965.
They lived in Sayville, NY for 32 years before becoming âSnowbirdsâ and splitting their time between Waddington, NY and Barefoot Bay, Fl.
Carol and Mike were wanderers by nature, often taking family trips down the âblue highwaysâ of America when the kids were young. As adults, the whole family traveled together frequently including many Caribbean sailing adventures. After retirement, Carol and Mike traversed Ireland and Italy, railroaded across Canada, barged down the Rhine River and visited many other places in the world.
Well known to her friends was her intense passion for animals which led her to her adopting many homeless dogs including Mickey, Annie and Gypsy (who were not well behaved, didnât like people with hats, and sometimes tried to bite the family) but she loved them all and gave them a wonderful home to spend their final years. She was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flowers around her homes.
Carol had a stroke on July 1, 2017, and was unable to recover completely. We are grateful to all her friends and family who visited her, called dad, or sent notes of encouragement, love, and support. We are forever grateful to the St. Josephâs Nursing Home staff who took care of her until her passing.
Carol is survived by her loving husband Mike and 3 children Kelly (Chris) Anderson of East Hampton, NY, Michael (Meggin) Bennett of Sayville, NY, and Meghan (Gordon) Fetterly of Waddington, NY. âGrandma Love Muffinâ adored her 6 grandchildren (Jake, Reghan, Grace, Calum, Maggie, and Lilly). Carol is also survived by her brother Jack (Regina) McGowan who lives in Manlius, NY, her 2 brothers-in-law, Thomas (Mary) Bennett, Bryan (Theresa) Bennett, and 8 nieces and nephews and many many friends who considered her as close as family.
Services will be at Raynour and DâAndrea Funeral Home 245 Montauk Highway, West Sayville, NY 11796 on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 4-7 pm. Her interment will be at Old St. Maryâs Cemetery in Waddington at a date that is yet to be determined. If you are unable to make the services, please plant a flower in your garden in momâs memory.
