Ruth B. Griswold

OGDENSBURG-Ruth B. Griswold, 97, died Monday, October 16, 2017 , following a brief illness.  At her request, there will be no calling hours or service.

Arrangements are under the direction of LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home, Ogdensburg.

Ruth was born September 10, 1920, in Ogdensburg, to G. Albert Barton and Ruth St. Denny Barton.  She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1937 and from Potsdam Normal School in 1940.  She taught at Lovejoy Country School in Ogdensburg from 1940-1941 and 5th grade at Sherman School in Ogdensburg from 1941-1945.

In 1943 Ruth married Vernon C. Jenner in Long Beach, California, after he completed flight training in the 5th U.S. Army Air Force.  He flew P-38’s in the South Pacific where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.  He died during the polio epidemic in 1949.

Ruth returned to teaching in 1950 at George Hall Elementary and then Sherman School until retirement in 1977.  She married Robert L. Griswold in 1957.  He was an Industrial Arts teacher at Ogdensburg Free Academy Trade School and served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.  Ruth and Bob retired in 1977 and enjoyed traveling and their home which they designed and built in 1960.  Bob passed away in 2014.

Ruth is survived by a son, Charles A. Jenner (Butch), Long Lake, and a daughter, Suzanne Jenner Todd and her husband Alan, Ogdensburg; 3 step-children, James Griswold, Rensselaer Falls, and his companion Marcia Britton, Wyoming; Rhonda Griswold, Alaska; and Robert Griswold and his wife Avril, Norwood; 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren in Colorado.   She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Carney of Palm Harbor, Florida and several nieces and nephews.  Her brother, Charles A. Barton predeceased her in 2016.
